Valo Quartet

Led by the charismatic Polish violinist Maria Włoszczowska, well-known locally as the leader of Royal Northern Sinfonia, the Valo Quartet was formed in 2023, and made its British debut at Frome in Somerset.   With other members originating from Finland and the UK, the name comes from the Finnish word for 'light'.

They begin with music written in 1917 by Maria's compatriot Karol Szymanowski, best known for his orchestral music including two popular violin concertos.   Schubert's A minor quartet is the first of his wonderful handful of 'mature' quartets and features a familiar theme from his incidental music to the play 'Rosamunde'.  Ravel's sole quartet is exquisitely colourful and perfectly crafted, inspired by the ground-breaking work of his older colleague Debussy.
